NOT PEACE, BUT A SWORD
Our Lord made many shocking statements when He was on Earth, and this is certainly one of them.
Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
- Matthew 10:34-35
Our Lord is not saying that He came to cause trouble, but rather that conflict will sometimes be the result when a person who believes in Him is opposed by those who do not believe. Sometimes, places when a person believes in Christ, they are cut off from their family, fired from their job, put in jail, or even killed. As believers, we are not to be contentious and fighting with others, but sometimes our faith in Christ will cause others to oppose us, and while we must be kind to them, we must be more devoted to the One who saved us from our sins than even the dearest loved ones on Earth.
