NOT TOO HIGHLY OR TOO LOWLY

We live in the age of self-esteem, but in truth that is not a biblical concept. However, we do need a proper view of ourselves.

For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
- Romans 12:3

We ought not to think too highly of ourselves because that is an indication of pride. And God resists the proud. But on the other hand, we ought not to think too lowly of ourselves either. We want to consider ourselves always in the light of Scripture. We are made in the image of God and that makes us special. But we are also sinners in desperate need of a Savior. So there is never a cause for self-hatred, because God made us all special and unique. But there is also never just cause for self-exaltation and looking down on anyone else, because the ground is level at the foot of the cross.
