LISTEN BEFORE SPEAKING

We must beware of the great temptation of acting out of presumption. When we speak or act without having all the facts in a situation, we will be ashamed.

He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.
- Proverbs 18:13

James 1:19 reminds us to be “Swift to hear, and slow to speak.” We know that our tendency is to be just the opposite. Listening well requires patience, discipline, and a genuine concern for others. But listening well also enables us to respond with better understanding. Furthermore, it can keep our anger in check as we gather in more details. And when we listen, we gain respect from others so they can better receive what we have to say.
