WISELY DEFERRING ANGER

As we go through life, there will be people who do and say things that will provoke us, and some of them will be close to us. We need wisdom to be able to respond properly.

The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.
- Proverbs 19:11

We know that anger in itself is not a sin. There will be times when we need to be good and angry, but even then we must be careful not to sin. There are other times when we are provoked, but it is a minor issue, or we do not perceive any ill intent from the other person. And those instances it is best just to let the issue go. Our text says that it is to our glory if we pass over a transgression. That refers to forgiving minor offenses without making a big deal about them. But even those, if they keep happening, we must graciously address them. Always keep in mind that we are responsible for our own attitudes and actions even when we are angry.
